Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father left her family. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but at the time she was already making her television debut in a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
